China’s Tiangong space station continues advancing its orbital operations with the Shenzhou-19 crew currently conducting experiments since their October 2024 arrival. Commander Cai Xuzhe, along with Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze (China’s third female astronaut), are scheduled for a six-month mission focused on life sciences, materials research, and station maintenance. The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) recently confirmed successful completion of multiple extravehicular activities and ongoing preparations for the Shenzhou-20 crew rotation expected in spring 2025.
The Shenzhou-19 crew launched on October 29, 2024, and has already surpassed 100 days in orbit. They’re executing 86 scientific experiments across disciplines including space medicine, microgravity physics, and agricultural research. CMSA reports the crew maintains excellent health and has conducted two successful spacewalks to install equipment on Tiangong’s exterior modules.
The Tianzhou-8 cargo spacecraft docked with Tiangong in January 2025, delivering approximately 6 tons of supplies, experimental equipment, and propellant. This marked the 13th successful cargo mission supporting the permanently crewed station, which has been continuously occupied since June 2022.
According to CNSA announcements, the Shenzhou-20 mission is scheduled for launch in April 2025. The new three-person crew will overlap with Shenzhou-19 for approximately five days before the current crew returns to Earth, maintaining China’s continuous human presence in orbit.
